OUR

IMPACT

At Footy for Climate we love footy.

We join around 10 million other Australians who love our great game: youngers who watch the stars of today at the game or on the small screen; men and women from big cities and small towns playing for their local clubs every weekend during footy season; retired players who have ridden the highs and lows of their teams over decades.

Check out some of our projects and campaigns!

OUR LOCAL

This short film follows past and present AFL players back to their local clubs to talk about fond memories playing juniors, and how transitioning to renewable energy can help protect the future of grassroots footy.

We visited Hamilton F.N.C with Emma Kearney in western Victoria, the Goodwood Saints F.C with Riley Bonner and Riley Thilthorpe in Adelaide, and Fitzroy F.C with Nell Morris-Dalton and Dylan Buckely in Melbourne.

THREE

Go to the footy! Show up for your local team and community.

In June 2024, we did something pretty important. We set up a  Footy for Climate “Locker Room” at the Parliament of Victoria.

Lockers, benches, kit and more sat square in the middle of the historic Queens Hall and  across three days the Footy for Climate team, led by Tom,  gave  MPs a tour, showing them  the local clubs impacted by extreme weather, and chatting to passionate players like Izzy Huntington and Nicola Barr.

Local sport is especially vulnerable to a changing climate, as we’re already seeing. Since the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, the AFL has supported 535 footy clubs affected by climate-fuelled extreme weather.

But it wasn’t all serious talk! We got MPs to test out their handball skills and the chance to win a signed Sherrin with the closest guess at how many local footy players pulled on the boots every weekend across Victoria.

In a cocktail event on the second day, the AFL premiership cups came to visit along with AFL CEO Andrew Dillon, who spoke about the AFL’s commitment to assisting grassroots clubs and their own sustainability plan. It was a great evening and we loved to see so many players, MPs and supporters turn out for FFC.

Play your role and support grassroots footy and their communities.

THE

ROOM

WE ASKED EVERY MP TO SUPPORT THREE TACTICS:

More renewable energy for local clubs.

THE
GOAL

“Go Neutral offsets with 100% Australian Carbon Credits, sourced from projects that remove and store carbon by regenerating native Aussie bushland.

For AFLM players, the average transport emissions are approximately 8 tonnes of carbon dioxide. To put this in perspective, that’s about half of the average Australian’s yearly carbon footprint. It’s enough to drive a fuel-efficient car (5L/100kms) about 70,000kms. The same as driving from Perth to Sydney and back about 9 times.

Go Neutral offsets with 100% Australian Carbon Credits, sourced from projects that remove and store carbon by regenerating native Aussie bushland. By regenerating bushland the projects we support don’t just remove emissions, they also improve biodiversity and help restore landscapes right here in Australia.

GO
NEUTRAL

We all want to do our bit to tackle climate change but playing games all over the country means a lot of travel, which also means a lot of carbon emissions.

Since electric planes aren’t viable (yet), and you can’t play footy on zoom, we’ve partnered up with Go Neutral in a #footy4climate campaign to help AFL Players offset their emissions - covering flights, ground transport and our personal cars.

THE
COOL
DOWN

Like so many Australians, we’ve experienced the impacts of climate change first-hand.

But at the moment, if climate action was the footy season, Australia isn’t winning the premiership, we're not even making finals.

Scientists are clear we need to at least halve our emissions by 2030 and get to net-zero before 2050. Together we can get Australia to the top of the climate action ladder and safeguard the country we love.

That’s why AFLP4CA partnered with FrontRunners on The Cool Down - an open letter from professional athletes to Australia. With over 460 athletes from 40+ sports, we had 180+ current and former AFL players sign up to call for greater climate ambition.

You can join The Cool Down today and add your voice to ours, letting our leaders know we want to safeguard the future of the planet, and the future of sport.

THE
COOL DOWN
PODCAST

Introducing The Cool Down – a new podcast by Footy for Climate & Producey, powered by Bank Australia.

Each episode, host Tom Campbell is joined by an AFL or AFLW player and an expert as they discuss an issue related to climate change and how we can tackle it together.
